The Story

About Old Elk Straight Wheat Whiskey

Old Elk Distillery was founded in 2013 by Curt and Nancy Richardson (creators of OtterBox and Blue Ocean Enterprises) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The label is a collaboration with Master Distiller Greg Metze of MGP fame, a bourbon specialist with over 40 years of experience in whiskey development. They consistently produce top quality handcrafted vodkas, gins, and bourbons. Named Colorado "Distillery of the Year" by the New York International Spirits Competition for two consecutive years (2016-2017), the Old Elk Distillery produces Old Elk Bourbon, Dry Town Gin, Dry Town Vodka, and Nooku Bourbon Cream.

Their bourbon is handcrafted using a signature Slow Cut proofing process, which is said to enhance the bourbon’s flavors through a meticulous technique where the spirit is cut to proof, left to rest, and the process is repeated over the course of multiple weeks. This method takes significantly longer than the traditional 24-48 hour proofing process. This extra time allows the flavors to mingle, resulting in a smoother, more balanced bourbon. As less heat is produced, the lighter flavors stay in the liquid.

The Old Elk Straight Wheat Whiskey has Metze channeling his rye-crafting expertise into a wheat whiskey with a mash bill of 95% soft red winter wheat and 5% malted barley. Aged for 5 years and bottled at 100 proof, it's a lively, bright, and refreshing whiskey that has won several awards, including a Gold Medal from the Beverage Testing Institute and the title of "Colorado Wheat Whiskey Distillery of the Year" from the New York International Spirits Competition in 2020.

About American Whiskey

There are two main representatives of the American whiskey family, bourbon, and rye, but some other spirits don't fall into those two strictly regulated categories.

There's equally strictly regulated American single malt, made from 100% malted barley, Tennessee whiskey, essentially bourbon filtered through maple charcoal and aged in new charred oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

Bright and refreshing, the nose of this whiskey opens with soft honey, fruit, cherry, vanilla, and oak notes. The warm palate has peach, dried fig, vanilla, oak, yeast, and cedar. Finishes bold and smooth.
