About Remus Gatsby Reserve 15 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Made in honor of George Remus, dubbed "The King of Bootleggers," Remus is the house brand of Ross & Squibb (MGP). MGP has become a whiskey powerhouse and they reserve some of the best spirits for their house brand. Gatsby Reserve was crafted by Master Distiller Ian Stirsman and his team at Ross & Squib Distillery using some of their finest 15-year-old reserves. The straight bourbon whiskey was Inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, which is set to celebrate its 100-year anniversary. Jay Gatsby, in turn, is said to have been inspired by Remus. "Like the Remus Repeal Reserve series, Remus Gatsby Reserve gave us a chance to showcase some of the best bourbons we have – in this case, some of the finest 15-year-old bourbons in our reserves," said Stirsman. The rich, balanced, and flavor-packed whiskey is bottled at a cask strength of 97.8 proof and features an eye-catching Art Deco design.

About Remus Bourbon

George Remus, dubbed the "King of the Bootleggers," was a famous bootlegger during Prohibition, exploiting loopholes in the Volstead Act to distill bourbon. Born in 1878 in Germany, he settled in Chicago with his family in the 1880s. In his teens he worked in his uncle's pharmacy, later becoming the owner. It was there that he acquired experience that would prove invaluable during Prohibition, and the pharmacy would serve as the foundation for his empire.

He switched careers, going into law and eventually becoming a trial defense attorney — gathering even more useful skills. Once Prohibition was starting to wind up, he would defend many bootleggers, taking note of the riches they managed to amass. Once the Volstead Act was enacted, he found a way to circumvent it and provide a steady stream of spirits for his budding bootlegging operation. The empire expanded and Remus eventually had 3,000 workers as well as politicians on his payroll, briefly living a lavish lifestyle that reportedly inspired The Great Gatsby.

Tasting Notes

The nose is rich with dried fruit, caramelized nuts, tobacco, and charred oak. Look for candied fruit, leather, dark fruit, and a pleasant sweetness on the palate that leads to a long and oaky finish with cinnamon.
