About Old Elk 6 Year Old Sour Mash Reserve Small Batch No.2 Bourbon Whiskey

Old Elk Distillery was founded in 2013 by Curt and Nancy Richardson (creators of OtterBox and Blue Ocean Enterprises) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The label is a collaboration with Master Distiller Greg Metze of MGP fame, a bourbon specialist with over 40 years of experience in whiskey development. They consistently produce top-quality handcrafted vodkas, gins, and bourbons. Named Colorado “Distillery of the Year" by the New York International Spirits Competition for two consecutive years (2016-2017), the Old Elk Distillery produces Old Elk Bourbon, Dry Town Gin, Dry Town Vodka, and Nooku Bourbon Cream.

Their bourbon is handcrafted using a signature Slow Cut proofing process, which is said to enhance the bourbon’s flavors through a meticulous technique where the spirit is cut to proof, left to rest, and the process is repeated over the course of multiple weeks. This method takes significantly longer than the traditional 24-48 hour proofing process. This extra time allows the flavors to mingle, resulting in a smoother, more balanced bourbon. As less heat is produced, the lighter flavors stay in the liquid.

The Sour Mash Reserve is a throwback to their roots. At its core, there's the unique mash bill with 51% corn, 34% malted barley, and 15% rye. This expression is the second batch of the limited-release small-batch expression of their flagship high-malt mash bill. "As distillers, we know the magic is in the fermentation. The beauty of this expression is the contrast in the flavor profile resulting from a change in yeast strain as well as the geographic location of the distillery," says Head Distiller Kate Douglas. 30 barrels of the bourbon were produced. It's bottled at 104.4 proof.
