About Middle West Spirits Soul of Scarlet Bourbon Whiskey
"Part of the reason I started a distillery has to do with my family lineage," says Ryan Lang, the master distiller at Middle West Spirits. "There's four generations of distillers blood in my veins, although I might be the first generation to do this legally." Situated in a 10,000 square-foot warehouse in the heart of the Ohio River Valley, Middle West Spirits was founded in 2008 by Lang, together with his business partner, Brady Konya, a marketing wizard. Together, the pair marry modern distillation techniques with traditional craftsmanship and the finest ingredients — and it's working.
With a more than solid foundation of 4 generations of distilling traditions, their distillery opened its doors in 2010. Lang's great-grandfather was distilling moonshine on his farm, now Ryan oversees the distilling and procurement, carefully selecting ingredients and partners. Their whiskeys, bourbons, vodkas, and gins are made at the state-of-the-art craft distillery in downtown Columbus, Ohio.
The Soul of Scarlet is a bourbon whiskey that was conceived in partnership with BrewDog as part of a series that is meant to be paired with one of BrewDog's beers ― the Jet Black Heart oatmeal stout, to be exact. Crafted with a mash bill of Ohio soft red winter wheat, sweet yellow corn, dark pumpernickel rye, and two-row barley, the expression has spent 4 years in American white oak casks.
