About Town Branch 7 Year Old Kentucky Single Malt Whiskey

All Bourbon is Whiskey, but not all Whiskey is Bourbon—even in Kentucky. Enter Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co., a brewery and distillery formed in 1999 in Kentucky on the site of the former Lexington Brewing Company, the oldest brewery in the city. The company now brews a wide range of beers under the name Kentucky Ale, and several whiskeys under the Town Branch Distillery label, established in 2012. The spirits there are distilled in two copper stills imported from Scotland and that should tell what they're going for.

Town Branch Malt is no ordinary American single malt whiskey. Aged for a minimum of seven years in first-fill, used bourbon barrels, this is a whole another malt monster. It's in this extended time, where it develops complex and sweet flavors of oak to compliment the flavor profile of a mash bill of 100% malted barley. Bottled at 87 proof and non-chill filtered, this Kentucky single malt is a more balanced whiskey than most other American single malts, with a medium body and a smooth finish.

About American Whiskey

There are two main representatives of the American whiskey family, bourbon, and rye, but some other spirits don't fall into those two strictly regulated categories.

There's equally strictly regulated American single malt, made from 100% malted barley, Tennessee whiskey, essentially bourbon filtered through maple charcoal and aged in new charred oak barrels.

And then there's moonshine, a high proof (150- 170 proof) distilled spirit mainly made out of corn which gained popularity during the prohibition.

The nose carries into a full and sweet palate, with caramel taking over, followed by honey and vanilla. The finish is medium in length with mild heat and notes of honey, grains, and some dried fruits.
