1. Brugal Papa Andres Rum 2018 Edition

    Proof80 (40% ABV)
    Size750mL
During the latter half of the 19th century, Andrés Brugal Montaner — a Spanish expatriate who had emigrated to Cuba — uprooted his family and decided to take up permanent residence in the Dominican Republic. While in Cuba, Brugal had begun experimenting with the distillation of sugar cane, and upon his arrival in the Dominican Republic in 1888, Brugal opened the doors to Brugal & Co. Distillery.

Today, the fourth and fifth generations of Brugal's direct descendants continue to honor the memory of their ancestors by acting as personal guardians of the entire rum-making process at Brugal & Co. Brugal.

The Brugal family recipe is a closely guarded secret, preserved in the hearts of a privileged few, passed down from generation to generation.
After going through the distillation process, Brugal Rums are aged for up to eight years in hand-picked American oak casks.

This expression is named after Brugal founder, Don Andres Brugal. This particular blend has been in the Brugal family for five generations. This limited edition 2015 Alegria— which translates to ‘joy’ in English, was created by Jassil Villanueva Quintana, the Brugal family’s first ever Maestra Ronera (female Master Blender). Alegria is a blend of rums from three different types of rare casks. The special bottle was designed by acclaimed Spanish artist Javier Mariscal, only 1,000 of these unique handmade decanters have been made.

    Size750mL

Situated over 1,000 feet above sea level in southwestern Guatemala, the Ron Zacapa Plantation enjoys generous amount of sunlight and mineral-rich, volcanic soils, making it ideal for the cultivation of fresh, raw sugar cane. There, expert farmers — many of whom have been tending to the land for decades — carefully analyze the sugar cane as it matures on the estate, harvesting only the canes that contain high levels of sucrose and fiber and low levels of impurities.

While most rums are made using molasses, which is a byproduct of refining sugar cane, Ron Zacapa Rum is made using virgin sugar cane honey. The virgin sugar cane honey is extracted from the first pressing of raw sugar cane harvested on the Zacapa Plantation, and lends a luxurious, smooth texture to the rum. Once the honey has been extracted, it is fermented with a unique strain of pineapple yeast before being distilled through a single column still lined with copper.

Following distillation, Ron Zacapa XO Solera Gran Reserva Especial is solera-aged through a series of casks that were previously used to mature bourbon, sherry and Pedro Ximenez wine. Solera aging is a process that has generally been reserved for aging cognacs, ports and sherries. It involves filling a series of casks at different intervals over a long period of time. As rum from the oldest cask is emptied and bottled, the cask is re-filled with an equivalent amount of rum from the second-oldest cask in the solera. This cascading effect continues until the youngest cask in the solera is filled with new rum. As a result, no cask in the solera is ever fully emptied. In addition, as the younger rum cascades through the solera, its average age and complexity gradually increases over time.

Ron Zacapa XO is crafted from a marriage of rums that have been solera-aged and are up to twenty-five years old. In addition, the rum is finished in French oak barrels that were previously used to mature cognac. As a result, the rum has an intense mahogany color, along with an aroma of leather, burnt caramel, roasted nuts and orange zest. The aroma gives way to notes of tobacco, cherries, chocolate, dates and figs on the palate, and leads to a long, semi-sweet finish accented by notes of raisins, vanilla and cinnamon.

Ron Zacapa XO was named one of the Top 10 Spirits of the Year by Gayot, and was named the Best Sipping Rum by Gear Patrol. In addition, it was named one of the Ten Best Choices for National Rum Day by Forbes.

The story of Goslings Rum is a serendipitous one, dating as far back as 1806, when James Gosling ventured out to sea at the request of his father. Gosling was heading towards Virginia, equipped with wines and spirits worth 10,000 pounds Sterling. 91 days into the trip the charter on the ship Mercury ran out, forcing Gosling to settle in Bermuda. Eventually, he decided to open a wine and spirits shop on the island. The rest, as they say, is history.

Upon his return to England in 1824 James Gosling opened a shop with his brother Ambrose, which has been in the Gosling family ever since. Their first rum, the Black Seal, was produced nearly half a century later in 1863. Produced in Bermuda, the Black Seal is synonymous with the island. Today, the family business is in the 7th generation of Goslings, who continue to lead the company as the largest exporter of any Bermuda-made consumable product. Goslings is also the only company that blends and bottles on the island.

The 2020 Edition of their Papa Seal Rum continues in the vein of its ultra-premium single barrel predecessor, which has garnered numerous awards, including a 2019 Rum of The Year by the Caribbean Journal and 92 points by Tasting Panel. It was named after the CEO and father of the Goslings family of rum-makers, Malcolm Gosling, known among family and friends as "Papa Seal". This second release is a blend of pot and column-still rums that have spent between 10 and 21 years in hand-selected once-used medium-char bourbon barrels.

After blending, the liquid spends an additional 2 years in American white oak, letting the aromas and flavors marry in the humid and salty air of Bermuda. After filtration, the rum is bottled at 83 proof. Only 1500 bottles of this mellow and elegant rum were produced for the US market in 2020. Each cask was carefully hand-picked, every bottle meticulously bottled and labeled by hand. This expression is one of the few single barrel rums available on the market today.

  6. HSE Rhum Agricole Extra Vieux XO

    Proof86 (43% ABV)
    Size750mL
"HSE" stands for Habitation Saint Etienne. Built in the 19th century on the island of Martinique, a French island in the Caribbean Sea, it served as a sugar plantation and refinery before being transformed into a distillery in 1882 by the industrious Amédée Aubéry. In the following decades, it became thoroughly modernized, expanded, and connected to the railway. The building collapsed after being in operation for nearly a century and was bought and rebuilt in 1994 by Yves and José Hayot. They began restoring the historical site and relaunched the Saint Etienne brand.

Today the Martinique rhum agricole (a term for rum, produced from sugar cane juice) is the only one in the rhum category with the AOC designation. AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) is the French variant of certification for geographically protected wine, spirit, and food, which ensures the quality, authenticity, and character of the rhum. After the sugar cane is harvested, it's taken to the mills in order to extract the juice. After filtration, the juice is fermented and distilled. Both unaged "Blanc" and aged "Old" expressions are produced, the latter employing barrels that used to hold bourbon, cognac, sherry, and whiskey.

The HSE Rhum Agricole XO contains some of the oldest rhum from the HSE cellars, some spirits dating back to the 1960s. The rhum has spent at least a decade in meticulously selected cognac casks, lending the spirit its beautiful amber hue. Bottled at 86 proof, this award-winning expression is smooth with abundant wood and spice notes.

  7. Cihuatán Nikté Aged Reserve Rum

    Proof95 (47.5% ABV)
    Size750mL
El Salvador's only rum distillery, Ron Cihuatán’s story dates all the way back to the ancient Mayan city of Cihuatán. According to legend, a Goddess bestowed Cihuatán with riches and fertility. Her spirit still watches over the sugarcane fields, remaining in the shape of the Guazapa Mountain. This Salvadorean rum is named after this legend ― the Nahuat word "Cihuatán" translates to "the land beside the sleeping woman". It's the local culture, legends, gods, and spirits, that served as the main inspiration for El Salvador's first rum distillery.

The spirit is produced by Licorera Cihuatán, a subsidiary of Ingenio La Cabaña of El Salvador. This rum is made using a 100-year-old sugar cane mill. The Licorera Cihuatán craft distillery was established in 2004 and began distilling and aging their rums. After fermentation, the rum is mostly aged in used American oak bourbon barrels. The team has complete control over the process, starting with the sugar cane seeds, overseeing distilling, aging, blending, and bottling with Master Blender Gabriela Ayala channeling her passion into each bottle of the finished product.

With the Mayan legends serving as inspiration, each of their rums pays tribute to a different god or spirit. For this limited-edition rum, the inspiration was drawn from Kay Kikté – the Mayan festival of flowers where Mayans would offer seas of flower petals to the Goddess during an enchanted nocturnal celebration. During the making of this premium rum, Gabriela Ayala wished to honor the Queen of the Night, also known as Sac Nicté in Nauhat. A blend of rums aged in American oak ex-bourbon and new American oak barrels, this stunning rum offers flower aromas of jasmine and wild orchids – the same flowers from the ancient ceremony. Bottled at 47.5% ABV, this is a soft, delicate and flavorful premium rum.

In 1751, Severo Arango Y Ferro journeyed from Spain to the port city of Cartagena, situated in northern Colombia. Ferro had been sent to Columbia by the King, and was asked to establish and oversee commercial trading activities between Spain and its American colonies. Ferro proved himself to be an able and ruthless statesman and under his leadership, the city of Cartagena became a hub of economic activity and the most important port for the Spanish fleet in the Americas. Ferro's strength and power also earned him the nickname "Dictador." Dictador was partial to a variety of rums that were being distilled in the Caribbean at the time, many of which passed through Cartagena on their way to Spain. In 1913, over 150 years after Ferro initially arrived in Colombia, one of his descendants established Destileria Columbiana. Today, the distillery honors the legacy of its founding ancestors with Dictador Rum.

Dictador XO Perpetual Solera System Rum is crafted from virgin sugar cane juice, which is fermented and then distilled through an antique alembic copper still. Following distillation, the rum is aged solera aged through a series of casks that were previously used to mature bourbon.

As a result, Dictador Perpetual has an aroma of butterscotch, toffee, espresso beans and milk chocolate that gives way to notes of tropical fruits and citrus on the palate. The finish is long and complex, with sweet notes of caramel and vanilla mingled against spicy touches of pepper and oak. Dictador Perpetual also earned the Silver Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2012.

  10. Rhum Clément Cuvée Homere

    Proof88 (44% ABV)
    Size750mL
Sugarcane traces its history back to the Indus Valley where it was originally cultivated nearly 5,000 years ago. In the late fifteenth century, Christopher Columbus introduced sugarcane to the Caribbean, planting it on the island of Hispaniola (presently, the Dominican Republic and Haiti). Sugarcane quickly became the staple crop of the Caribbean islands, where it was harvested and refined before being exported to western Europe and New England. Molasses, the byproduct of refining cane sugar, was used by Caribbean farmers to distill rum, which was sold to the many ships that sailed through the islands.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the British Navy enforced a blockade against France, resulting in a plunge in the demand for Caribbean sugar. As farmers in the Caribbean began stockpiling the excess sugarcane they had harvested, distilleries throughout the Caribbean began turning to fresh sugarcane rather than molasses in order to produce rum. These rums became known as agricultural rhums or "rhum agricoles."

Rhum Clément is a rhum agricole crafted on the island nation of Martinque. The rhum is made exclusively from sugarcane harvested on the Domaine de l'Acajou Estate, which was purchased by Homère Clément in 1887. In order to harvest the sugarcane, expert farmers chop the stalks of the cane as low to the ground as possible in order to preserve the highest concentration of glucose (due to its weight, glucose is pulled to the bottom of the stalk by gravity). Then, within an hour of its harvest, the sugarcane is transported to the distillery and crushed in order to preserve the most fresh and raw flavor possible. Once the sugarcane juice has been extracted, it is fermented with an organic, proprietary strain of yeast before being distilled through Clément's single-column copper still (the still is modeled after the classic Armagnac stills of France).

Rhum Clément Cuvée Homere is the magnum opus of the Rhum Clément Distillery. The rum is a blend of the best rums produced over the past fifteen years at the distillery, each of which was matured either in French Limousin barrique casks or re-charred, American oak barrels.

The rum has an aroma of fresh biscuits, almonds, melted butter and warm spices. Notes of hazelnuts, tropical fruits, bananas, chocolate and pepper dominate the flavor profile, and give way to a finish accented by notes of citrus, oak, honey and cinnamon.

Rhum Clément Cuvée Homere was named one of the Top 50 Spirits by Wine Enthusiast, which gave it a score of 97 points in 2013. In addition, it earned the Gold Medal from the Beverage Testing Institute, and five stars from F. Paul Pacult's Spirit Journal.
