About Southern Star Reserve High Rye Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Southern Distilling Company is situated at the “Crossroads for the Future” in Statesville, North Carolina. Newcomers onto the craft distilling scene, their city was once, before Prohibition, known as the “liquor capital of the world” in the 1880s. Statesville was home to some of the finest brandies and whiskeys, and more recently an outpour of local farm distilleries and major spirits wholesalers. The family-owned and operated distillery is owned by Pete and Vienna Barger.
This vibrant young craft distillery boasts the largest facility in North and South Carolina, with a potential output of up to 500,000 proof gallons. The colossal, modern two-story glass-fronted distillery houses an innovative, state-of-the-art craft distillery in 25,000 square feet, sited on 20 comfortable acres of agricultural farmland and old growth hardwood trees.
Their stainless steel and copper column still system stands 40 feet tall, making it the highest in North Carolina. This still produced Southern Stars award-winning, handcrafted, limited edition whiskeys in small batches, with a portion of whiskeys matured in their exclusive custom-designed “Double Barrel” spirit safe, before being bottled by hand onsite. Southern Distilling Company is also a staunch advocate for their local agricultural community.
Southern Star Reserve High Rye Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a warm and inviting bourbon with a nice deep rich amber hue from its ten-year rest in old barrels. “Pleasant flavors of toffee, caramel, date, and fruit abound while maintaining a big and well-balanced mouthfeel. Rye spiciness explodes and dances on the palate” (producer). Bottled at 100 proof this exquisite reserve bourbon earned a Gold Medal at the 2017 New York World Wine & Spirits Competition.
