About Fernet Francisco 9th Release

Fernet is a bitter spirit that originates in Italy. With grape distillate serving as the base, the amaro is crafted with several herbs and spices and typically drunk as a digestif. The versatile spirit is a popular cocktail ingredient that is often mixed with coffee drinks. In the US, its unlikely home is San Francisco, where the drink has been very popular since pre-Prohibition times.

Max Rudsten and Ben Flajnik ― both Bay Area locals ― both became friends over a toast with a shot of fernet. Incidentally, they were both involved with the drink before they met. Rudsten was perfecting his own recipe, experimenting with maceration, infusion, and barrel-aging at home using various plants and herbs, while Flajnik was traveling across the globe, researching various methods and techniques at renowned distilleries.

Their mutual love of amari brought about the creation of the first locally-crafted Bay Area fernet ― Fernet Francisco. The fernet is crafted with grape brandy and a dozen local hand-picked herbs and botanicals that include rhubarb, gentian root, orris root, cardamom, bay leaves, cinnamon, fresh orange peel, peppermint, spearmint, angelica root, and German chamomile. The entire recipe is secret, as is usually the case with fernet.

Fernet Francisco 9th Release is a part of their limited-release Cask series. It matures in Willett Bourbon casks for 6 months, resulting in a rich, complex, and oaky fernet that is bottled at 80 proof.
