The beer was brewed and aged in bourbon barrels before being sent back to the distillery to be filled with their delicious whiskey for 10-13 months. Some partnerships are simply iconic, like Batman and Robin, Thelma and Louise, and Woody and Buzz. But now, there's a new dynamic duo making waves in the world of spirits — Breckenridge Brewery and Breckenridge Distillery. Enter Buddy Pass, the brainchild of an Imperial Oatmeal Stout and Imperial Stout Cask Finish Whiskey, born from a barrel-exchange program between these award-winning brands. Here's the lowdown: Breckenridge Brewery brewed the Imperial Oatmeal Stout at their original location, aged it in Breckenridge Distillery Bourbon barrels, then returned it to stainless steel containers. Those barrels were then sent back to the distillery to be filled with their delicious whiskey for 10-13 months. The Imperial Oatmeal Stout imparts notes of dark chocolate-covered cherries, espresso, and toffee; its time in the Breckenridge Bourbon barrels imparts hints of caramel sweetness. Joined by the mature oak and cinnamon spice, the finish waves away in a long, dry, and spicy spell. A bold, boozy brew that marries the best of both worlds and begs to be shared with friends.

About Breckenridge

Situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge Distillery makes one of the best bourbons in the world. The distillery, which is only 4,000 square feet itself, is situated 9,600 feet above sea level, making it the highest distillery in the world. There, Jordan Via — Breckenridge’s master distiller — ferments a mash of 56% corn, 38% rye, and 6% malted barley in an open-top Scottish fermenter before distilling it twice through a $140,000, 550-gallon, Vendome copper-pot still originally made in Kentucky.

With a profound range of expressions ranging from award-winning bourbons and port cask finished whiskeys to chili flavored vodkas, and over two dozen awards, including 2 "Distillery of the Year" awards, Breckenridge is without saying a well-established player in the game. This is very impressive considering Bryan Nolt founded Breckenridge in 2007.

After distillation, their bourbon is aged at 120 proof in American white oak casks with a number 3 char for approximately three years and is then brought to proof using pure Rocky Mountain snowmelt from atop Mount Quandry, which has a 14,000-foot peak. "In Breckenridge, we have fresh snowmelt water that’s full of minerals and has its own flavor,” says Bryan Nolt, Breckenridge Distillery’s founder and CEO. "The pH is perfect and the minerals add taste to our spirits just as salt adds flavor to foods," he says.

About American Whiskey

There are two main representatives of the American whiskey family, bourbon, and rye, but some other spirits don't fall into those two strictly regulated categories.

There's equally strictly regulated American single malt, made from 100% malted barley, Tennessee whiskey, essentially bourbon filtered through maple charcoal and aged in new charred oak barrels.

And then there's moonshine, a high proof (150- 170 proof) distilled spirit mainly made out of corn which gained popularity during the prohibition.

Tasting Notes

The nose presents a rich combination of cinnamon and oak aromas, complemented by a delicate hint of fresh orange zest and chocolate. The palate is complex, with the smoothness of dark chocolate and the boldness of espresso notes complemented by a luscious toffee and caramel sweetness. The finish is long, with the oak and bold cinnamon spice taking center stage and lingering, resulting in a dry, spicy aftertaste.
