About Asbury Park Distilling Aquavit
Asbury Park Distilling is the first distillery in Asbury Park, New Jersey, since Prohibition. It was launched in 2017 by Rob Wile, Zack Ohebshalom, and 4 other partners. Located in the downtown business district, the craft distillery team produces gin, bourbon, vodka, aquavit, and an espresso limoncello, with more expressions planned for the future. Master Distiller Bill Tambussi traveled from Scotland to the US, earning a Master's Degree at the Heriot-Watt University before finally being able to channel his passion into distilling, fulfilling his long-time dream. After working at Philadelphia Distillery, he found his new home in Asbury Park. He is helped by fellow distiller Kelly Lynch, who helps with their German-made custom Carl Artisan still.
They take pride in their logo which perfectly embodies who they are. It depicts a mermaid, flanked by juniper berries and rye stalks, both key components in their spirits. Behind her, you can see The Carousel, an iconic Asbury Park building, while the tentacles and seashell pay tribute to the ocean that lies just a few blocks from the distillery. The mermaid's closed eyes symbolize Asbury Park's "accepting, collaborative, cooperative, and proud" community.
A tasting room is on the premises, offering a wide range of cocktails beside their spirits. As they are legally obliged to sell only alcohol that is produced on-site, it's a great opportunity to taste delicious drinks that are truly made from scratch, which includes all the alcohol, bitters, tonics, syrups, cordials, tinctures, and anything else that makes it into a cocktail. Casey Bowen has been the head bartender since 2017, working his magic into each drink that is served there.
Asbury Park Distilling Aquavit is a grain-based spirit that is distilled from 100% corn with caraway and dill. An exclusive list of botanicals makes for a complex and flavor-packed expression that's bottled at 86 proof. Look for notes of licorice, anise, juniper, and caraway, as well as a pleasant warmth throughout. It has won a Double Gold Medal at the 2021 edition of the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, where it was named "Best of Class".
