About Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Brandy Cask Finish Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Woodford Reserve Distillery was founded in 1838 by Reverend Elijah Craig and is the oldest Kentucky bourbon distillery still in operation today. Under the stewardship of Craig's oldest son (Oscar Pepper) and master distiller James Crow, the Woodford Reserve Distillery reformed and modernized the process of producing whiskey in the United States — the distillery introduced the concepts of sour mash, yeast propagation and copper pot distillation.
Today, nearly two centuries later, Chris Morris — Woodford Reserve's seventh master distiller — pays homage to Pepper and Crow with the Woodford Reserve Master's Collection, an annual release of a whiskey crafted by Morris specifically to honor the distillery's innovative and pioneering history. Morris, who began working at Woodford Reserve Distillery when he was just 16 years old, is one of the foremost experts in the production and maturation of whiskey and samples up to 180 unique whiskies each day. “Our charter is to be the home of innovative whiskey,” he says.
Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection Finished in Brandy Casks is the eleventh and latest release in Woodford’s esteemed Master’s Collection series. The fully matured whiskey, which was personally developed by Morris, is finished in brandy casks for two years. This is the first whiskey to be aged in American brandy casks, which emphasize the rich flavors of dried fruit and nuts developed through Woodford’s grain selection and fermentation process.
As a result, Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection Finished in Brandy Casks has an aroma of chocolate, maple syrup, and dark dried fruits. The palate of toasted hazelnuts and toffee covered fruit is accented by wood and spicy notes, with a warming caramel finish.
"As with every Master's Collection release, this expression highlights Woodford Reserve's creativity and dedication to innovation. I'm extremely proud to say we've yet again done something very special," said Master Distiller Chris Morris. "Among Woodford Reserve's many flavors include fruit and spice notes which the brandy casks emphasize. Both products showcase rich, intense vanilla notes from their barrel maturation making the combination of the two a true success."
