About Mezcal de Leyendas Maguey Mexicano Oaxaca

Made by 4th generation Maestro Mezcalero Don Francisco with over 40 years of experience, Mezcal de Leyendas Maguey Mexicano Oaxaca is an artisanal mezcal blanco. It's crafted from maguey Mexicano, a large agave that's endemic to Mexico and needs 10-14 years to reach maturity, in the mountains of Sierra Madre del Sur at 1554 meters above sea level in southwest Mexico. The agave is first roasted in a stone pit, crushed by a tahona stone, fermented in oak wood vats, and finally distilled in traditional copper alembic stills. This stunning expression greets with fresh herbs like epazote and rue on the nose and a lightly spiced but rich palate.

Mezcal de Leyendas is focused on bringing artisanal mezcals using rare and unique agaves from different regions within Mexico. Instead of focusing on one particular type, their aim is to use the most prevalent agaves from each region allowing them to guide the consumer across the entire DO of mezcal. These are sourced from diverse regions, highlighting the local terroir as well as showcasing the skills of local Maestros Mezcaleros. Each region ― be it Durango, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, or San Luis Potosi ― features one master producer of mezcal.

But they do far more than just that. In 2005 they opened the first Mexico City establishment that only sells artisanal mezcal helping spark the boom we see in mezcal today. They organize festivals and work to help the industry grow, educate, and take part in projects that deal with sustainability and fair trade ― both crucial aspects of securing a bright future for the famous Mexican spirits.

About Mezcal

Mezcal is a distilled spirit made from roasted agave plants between two days and two weeks, which gives it a distinct smokey flavor.
What scotch is for whisk(e)y, mezcal is for tequila.

It can be made from different types of agave in different parts of Mexico, but most of it (60%) comes from the state of Oaxaca. Mezcal offers a large diversity of flavor profiles and ranges between 40 and 55% ABV.
