About Equiano Light Rum

Olaudah Equiano was born in 1845 in The Kingdom of Benin, which is today's Nigeria. Enslaved in his youth, Equiano had the chance to buy his freedom by trading rum and eventually saved enough to succeed. He worked in the Caribbean before settling in the United Kingdom. One of the first African writers to have their work published in the UK and the US, it was his work as a freedom fighter, revolutionary, and abolitionist that would put his mark on history. This rum pays tribute to Equiano's legacy and name by giving 5% of company profits to ground level freedom and equality projects annually.

Equiano Rum is the world's first African and Caribbean rum. It brings together two worlds, the old and the new. The award-winning spirit was crafted by industry legend master distiller and blender Richard Seale. It's a blend of fresh sugar cane juice rum from Gray's Distillery in Mauritius and barrel-aged molasses rum from Foursquare Distillery in Barbados. This is a refreshingly unique tropical rum. Bottled at 86 proof, it's a fruity and pleasantly sweet spirit with vanilla and citrus notes.

About Rum

Rum history allegedly started in the Carribiens in the 17th century when they started to ferment and distill molasses, a byproduct of sugar production. Most of the Rum is aged in oak or ex-wine casks, giving its color and flavor.

We distinguish between 4 different Rum categories, where white or unaged rum is mainly used in cocktails, while dark, spiced, and añejo (aged) rum are mostly enjoyed neat.
