About Castle & Key Wheated 2022 Small Batch 2 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Big things were expected from Wes Murray and Will Arvin when they restored the legendary Old Taylor distillery in Kentucky and founded Castle & Key in its place in 2014. And they managed to deliver. In 2022, they released the first small batches of in-house distilled and bottled straight bourbon whiskey, an outstandingly performing sipping whiskey that is an instant hit with connoisseurs. The mashbill of the bourbon is 73% white corn, 10% wheat, and 17% malted barley. A batch is created by using a series of pods; each pod is created by grouping specific barrels. Since Castle & Key is looking for a unique expression in each batch, rather than trying to enforce a uniform flavor profile, each small batch has a slightly different twist to it. Castle & Key Straight Bourbon Whiskey Batch number 2 is a medium-bodied whiskey, filled with sweet flavors of dried fruit and vanilla, and a long, deep finish. This excellent sipping bourbon was aged for 4 years and bottled at an ABV of 49%. It only comes in 49 barrels.

Tasting Notes

This golden bourbon has an intriguing nose with notes of cocoa powder, toffee, buttercream, cereal grain, black pepper, and baked pear. The palate is vanilla- and popcorn-forward, with subtle notes of caramelized sugar, pie crust, roasted cashews, dried apricots, grains of paradise, and fennel. The finish is semi-long, with hints of dark honey.
