About A.D. Rattray 27 Year Old The Glen Grant Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Glen Grant Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from crisp Scottish barley, much of it still harvested from the same Morayshire fields that John and James Grant used nearly two centuries ago.
Once the barley has been malted and mashed, it is fermented in washbacks made of Oregon Pine. While wooden washbacks are more expensive and difficult to maintain as compared to stainless steel washbacks, they absorb more heat generated during the fermentation process and thus, create a lighter and more rich whisky. Following fermentation, the wash is twice distilled, first through Glen Grant's copper-pot wash still and then again through its spirit still. Each still is equipped with a purifier, which acts as small condenser and causes a portion of the evaporating vapors to be pumped back into the pot and then re-distilled. This purification process — Glen Grant in the only distillery in Scotland to use purifiers in both distillations — results in whisky that has a signature fresh and malty flavor.
Glen Grant 27 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (A.D. Rattray Bottling) was distilled on December 31, 1985 and matured for nearly 10,000 days, or just over 27 years, in a used sherry cask that was hand-selected by Dennis Malcolm, one of just eight Glent Grant master distillers in the past 125 years. Malcolm, who began apprenticing at the distillery as a cooper when he was only 15 years old, has over five decades of experience distilling and maturing whisky. "We don't believe in rushing things at Glen Grant,"he says. "We allow nature to take its time to do its work."On January 7, 2013, the maturing, non-chill filtered whisky was bottled at cask strength.
Glen Grant 27 Year Old Single Malt has a fruity aroma, with notes of apples, pears and orange, followed by hints of butter and toffee. The initial flavors are light and fresh, with touches of salted caramel, buttery bread, caramelized sugar and ginger, and are followed by a bold and robust finish.
Only 453 bottles of Glen Grant 27 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (A.D. Rattray Bottling) were ever produced. Pick up a bottle today!
About A. D. Rattray
In 1868, Andrew Dewar and William Rattray began importing French and Italian wines into Scotland. By the end of the century, their company — known as A.D. Rattray — was representing a number of distilleries in the Highlands region of Scotland, and sold malt whisky to blending houses and exporters.
Over the course of the past 150 years, A.D. Rattray acquired several smaller whisky merchants. As a result, A.D. Rattray's principal business now is bottling unusual and exclusive casks of whisky that represent the unique characteristics of Scotland's different whisky regions, and the whiskies of the Cask Collection represent the finest of these. All whiskies within the Collection are non-chill-filtered and bottled at cask strength.
About Scotch
Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.)
Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.
