About Thomas Handy Sazerac 2020 Straight Rye Whiskey

Buffalo Trace's revered Antique Collection is home to several ultra-premium whiskey expressions that have garnered countless awards over the years. Thomas Handy Sazerac is named after a New Orleans bartender who was the first to use rye whiskey in a Sazerac cocktail. Always bottled directly from the barrel, it's a series of bold and rich whiskey that's always uncut and unfiltered. The 2020 release is particularly well-balanced yet powerful. Distilled in 2014 from Minnesota rye, Kentucky corn, and North Dakota malted barley, this expression was bottled in 2020 after spending more than 6 years in its new American oak (#4 char) casks. At 129 proof, you can expect a deliciously bold straight rye with fruity, spicy, floral, and sweet notes.

About Rye

As American as the bald eagle, rye whiskey was first brewed in the American Northeast in the 1600s. Even George Washington distilled it after leaving the Oval Office, so there’s no way of denying its origin.
It’s distinguished from bourbon for its original and unique spicy notes.

By law, rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye grain, aged in new and charred oak barrels for at least two years, and bottled at no more than 62,5% ABV.

The nose is floral and fruity with apricot, cherry, and cream aromas. Look for baking spice, anise, and honey on the pleasantly sweet palate with hints of dried fruit and citrus. The finish is balanced with black pepper, dark fruit, floral, and pine notes.
