About Mezcal de Leyendas Maguey Jabalí Oaxaca

Handcrafted by 5th generation Maestro Mezcalero Cosme 'Tucho' Hernandez Martinez, Mezcal de Leyendas Maguey Jabalí Oaxaca is an artisanal mezcal blanco. It's made from maguey 'Jabalí', an endemic agave variety from Oaxaca that's mostly grown in the wild. The agave is first roasted in a stone pit, crushed by a tahona stone, fermented in oak wood vats, and finally distilled in traditional copper alembic stills. Tucho's palenque – an artisanal mezcal facility – is located in the mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur in southwest Mexico near a natural spring of pristine water. Expect spicy aromas on the nose and meaty flavors of overripe fruits on the balanced palate.

Mezcal de Leyendas is focused on bringing artisanal mezcals using rare and unique agaves from different regions within Mexico. Instead of focusing on one particular type, their aim is to use the most prevalent agaves from each region allowing them to guide the consumer across the entire DO of mezcal. These are sourced from diverse regions, highlighting the local terroir as well as showcasing the skills of local Maestros Mezcaleros. Each region ― be it Durango, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, or San Luis Potosi ― features one master producer of mezcal.

But they do far more than just that. In 2005 they opened the first Mexico City establishment that only sells artisanal mezcal helping spark the boom we see in mezcal today. They organize festivals and work to help the industry grow, educate, and take part in projects that deal with sustainability and fair trade ― both crucial aspects of securing a bright future for the famous Mexican spirits.

About Mezcal

Mezcal is a distilled spirit made from roasted agave plants between two days and two weeks, which gives it a distinct smokey flavor.
What scotch is for whisk(e)y, mezcal is for tequila.

It can be made from different types of agave in different parts of Mexico, but most of it (60%) comes from the state of Oaxaca. Mezcal offers a large diversity of flavor profiles and ranges between 40 and 55% ABV.
