Named in honor of the amendment that repealed Prohibition, Bootlegger 21 New York Gin is a "testament to the youthful and rebellious spirit that reigned during the Roaring Twenties," says Brian Facquest, Prohibition Distillery's owner and master distiller. The gin is crafted by first distilling Bootlegger 21 New York Vodka, which is made entirely from corn. Once the vodka has been distilled, it is steeped in five unique botanicals, including juniper, coriander, lemon verbena, orris root and bitter orange. "The botanicals soak for 24 hours," says Brian, and "then we redistill the gin through our 300 gallon pot still to remove color and bind the flavors together." As a result, the gin has hints of pine and juniper on the nose, that give way to bursts of floral citrus, grapefruits, orange zest and spicy coriander on the palate. "We bottle at 94 proof," adds Brian, "and like Bootlegger 21 Vodka, our gin is gluten-free and certified kosher." The first batch of Bootlegger 21 Gin has just been bottled, and this batch includes a limited edition label that resembles a doctor's prescription (during Prohibition, alcohol was available with a prescription).
