About Roots Rakomelo Liqueur

Roots was founded by brothers Manos and Nikolas Smyrlakis who have roots in the oldest distillery in Greece. The brand focuses on traditional recipes for Greek liqueur using local ingredients to craft premium liqueurs. Drawing on the rich tradition of Greek culture and spirit making traditions as well as 4 generations of distilling, Roots produces mastiha (tree resin distillate), tentura (cinnamon liqueur), rakomelo, and herb spirit (a bitter liqueur).

Rakomelo is a Greek spirit that originates from the Aegean Islands and Crete and is usually crafted with brandy, honey, and spices. Most often it is drunk warm in the winter days, as a digestif, or even a home remedy for the common cold, but it's served as a chilled shot during the warmer days as well. The name stems from the Greek words raki (grape pomace distillate) and meli (honey).

Roots Rakomelo liqueur is crafted using a historic, centuries-old Greek recipe with mountain thyme honey and spices (cinnamon and cloves) from the Aegean Islands and raki that is crafted with high-quality Muscat grapes. Traditionally the honeyed grape pomace spirit (known as grappa in Italy) is drunk warm with some orange and cloves added ― a great serving tip for Roots Rakomelo! It's a rich, sweet, and spicy drink that is perfect for colder days as well as making for a delicious mixer in various cocktails, pairing especially well with aged spirits. There's no sugar added.
