About Calle 23 Añejo Tequila

Calle 23 is a proudly Mexican distillery run by one special Sophie Decobecq, a French microbiologist who learned the ropes in South Africa and then harnessed her newly-found distilling knowledge when moving to Mexico, where she opened her very own distillery. Oh, and the story behind the name? She said she was inspired by looking at a sign across the street, ‘Calle 23,’ and thought it an unusually appropriate name! Spontaneity is the best source of inspiration, and we firmly believe that. However, the production of her tequilas is not spontaneous but a result of tried-and-tested recipes respecting the culture and heritage of Los Altos, Jalisco. Cue in Calle 23 Añejo—a spirit clocking in at 40% ABV and distilled with the utmost care, made with 100% agave and aged to perfection for a whopping 16 months in ex-bourbon barrels. The result is a well-balanced flavor profile that perfectly blends the rich vanilla sweetness from the cask with the vibrant personality of the agave.

About Tequila

Although tequila has developed a bad reputation, there's more to the spirit than just shots on a Saturday night.

This traditional Mexican drink origins in the state of Jalisco when according to a local legend, lightning struck an agave cactus before the Nahua tribe drank its warm nectar. Behold, tequila.

Legally, tequila has to be made of 51% of Blue agave around the Jalisco region in Mexico. There are different types of tequila according to age - from the youngest representatives, blanco, reposado, and añejo, to the oldest extra añejo.
