About Barrell Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey Batch #008

Though all bourbons are made from the same basic ingredients, it's the choices the master distiller makes that shapes his creation.”
Barrell Bourbon Batch #008 is made from a mash of 70% corn, 25% rye and 5% malted barley. After the grains are sourced, they are mashed and fermented before being distilled in Tennessee through a copper still. The bourbon is then matured for five years in #4 charred, American white oak barrels. The intense southern heat causes the wooden barrel staves to expand and contract, interacting with the whiskey and contributing notes of saddle leather, burning tobacco and barbecue as it matures.
Once the bourbon has matured for over nine years, it is bottled at cask strength of 132.8 proof without the use of chill-filtration (chill filtration removes the cloudiness that is natural to bourbon, but also removes the fatty acids and esters that contribute to the whiskey's overall flavor and complexity). As a result, the bourbon has an aroma of stone fruit and melons, as well as oak from the barrels. The palate has notes of corn and wild berries, leading to a smooth, caramel finish with a hint of sweet barbecue.
Barrell Straight Bourbon Whiskey earned a score of 98 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2016, which was the second-highest score in the entire competition.
