Established in 1902 by a cadre of local publicans hoping to capitalize on the onsetting gin wave, Langley Distillery — which was dormant by the 1950s — was later purchased by the W.H. Palmer Group, a family-owned company whose main line of business was chemical compounding and wholesale. Trying its hand at distilling, the W.H. Palmer Group found great success in the gin business as demand continued to soar throughout Britain, and today, Langley Distillery — which is run by Adam Wallis Palmer, the great-great-grandson of the original Palmer Group founder — has become one of the UK’s most storied distilleries.

Langley Distillery produces eleven different gin recipes using its seven different stills; Langley’s No. 8 Distilled London Gin is, however, the first-ever gin produced in Langley’s to bear the distillery’s name.

Langley’s No. 8 Distilled London Gin is made by combining eight botanicals with 100% English neutral grain spirit. While the exact botanical recipe remains a secret, the gin utilizes juniper from Macedonia, Sri Lankan ground nutmeg, coriander seeds from Bulgaria, sweet orange and sweet lemon peel from Spain and cassia bark from Indonesia. Once combined, the resulting spirit mix is added immediately to “Connie”, Langley Distillery’s oldest still. Connie, short for Constance (named after Master Distiller Rob Dorestt’s late mother), is a 3,000-liter copper pot still which was made circa 1960 by John-Dore, the oldest distillery engineering establishment in the world.

The distillate is then bottled at a nearby facility in Essex at an exact 41.7% ABV. To arrive at this number, each decimal between 40% ABV and 45% ABV was tested, with the consensus being that 41.7% ABV was the perfect balance of strength and flavor.

Langley’s No. 8 Distilled London Gin has an aroma of fresh juniper and pine, which leads to a complex palate filled with zesty but not oversweet citrus, Eastern spices and licorice. The finish is noticeably dry, with lasting notes of pepper and nutmeg.

Langley’s No. 8 Distilled London Gin won the Gold Medal at the 2014 San Francisco Wold Spirits Competition and earned 4.5 out of 5 stars from Difford’s Guide. Pick up a bottle today!
