The Best Bottles of Scotch for the Holidays

delivered doorside to make life easy

The holiday season is here and shopping for the perfect gift can be as elusive as the fountain of youth...although we are pretty sure we may have found it at the bottom of one of these bottles. To make gifting just a little bit easier we took on the arduous task of tasting thousands of spirits and rounded up our top selections in some of the most popular categories for this holiday season.

The Glenlivet
18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

What Makes It Great:

This bottle may just be your new favorite 18 year old. The Glenlivet 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky earned the Double Gold Medal at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition for good reason. Following distillation, The Glenlivet Master Distiller Alan Winchester uses a variety of casks - both American and European Oak, with a combination of first- and second-fill - to age The Glenlivet 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. While the first-fill American Oak adds tropical fruit notes to the whisky, the European Oak imparts a bold spiciness that creates an incredibly balanced whisky.

Tasting Notes:

Apricot-hued appearance, along with an aroma of dried fruits - particularly mangoes - and toffee. Palate is wonderfully balanced, with notes of ripe oranges, raisins and ginger, and leads to a phenomenal finish marked by butterscotch candy and lemon squares.

Glenmorangie
18 Year Old Extremely Rare Single Malt Scotch

What Makes It Great:

After distillation, this whisky is aged for fifteen years in used bourbon casks. Then, approximately 30% of the whisky is double-barreled, or finished, in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks for an additional three years. After both the original and double-barreled whisky have reached 18 years of age, they are blended together in order to create Glenmorangie 18 Year Old Extremely Rare Whisky. This bottle of Scotch has received many awards and accolades including the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and “Best in Class” at the International Wine and Spirits Competition.

Tasting Notes:

Notes of mandarin, banana, apple and pear. Well-textured, flavors open up to notes of apricots, nuts and vanilla, along with hints of raisins and fudge. Finish lingers with a touch of almonds and sweet citrus.

Aberlour
12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

What Makes It Great:

Aberlour Single Malt Whisky is made exclusively from Scottish barley that is mashed and fermented through unusually large copper pot stills exposing as much direct heat as possible to the wash. Following distillation, it is aged for a minimum of 12 years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks; this whisky earned a score of 90-95 points from Wine Enthusiast.

Tasting Notes:

The used Oloroso casks impart subtle yet sweet notes of dried fruits, caramel, plums and cherries to the whisky, and contribute an incredible layer of complexity.

Ardbeg
Uigeadail Single Malt Scotch Whisky

What Makes It Great:

Ardbeg Uigeadail Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from a marriage of Ardbeg Whisky that has matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks and earned the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a score of 95 points from Whisky Advocate and a score of 97.5 points from theWhisky Bible, which named it the Whisky of the Year.

Tasting Notes:

Aroma of Christmas cake, violet, ocean spice, cedar and chewy leather. Initially sweet flavor profile, with touches of cherry, dark chocolate and caramelized oranges. Subtle undertone of peat, with touches of honey and tobacco. Finish is long and chewy, with notes of raisins, figs and mocha.

Highland Park
18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

What Makes It Great:

After malting the barley, Highland Park Distillery smokes it using peat sourced from floral heather bushes, which burn hotter and cleaner than the grassy peats of Islay and has greater derivatives of carbohydrates and a lower concentration of lignin than peat from Islay, giving Highland Park's peat a unique chemical fingerprint. Highland Park 18 Year Old Single Malt earned the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2007 and 2009, and earned a score of 96-100 points from Wine Enthusiast, which said it was "the greatest distilled spirit of this generation." In addition, it was rated the best spirit in the world by F. Paul Pacult (founder of the Spirit Journal), who said "it fits my profile of what makes a perfect whisky, which is to say it's totally in harmony; there are no rough edges and everything is melded together brilliantly."

Tasting Notes:

Dark amber color, along with an aroma of dried fruits, heather honey, cedar and soft peat. Aroma gives way to notes of apricots, cherries and honey on the palate, which are well-balanced by a subtle, smoky undertone that is accented with a hint of salty tang. Rich, mellow finish that has warming, spicy touch.

Lagavulin
Distillers Edition

What Makes It Great:

After the whisky has matured in traditional oak casks, it is double-barreled, or finished, in casks that were previously used to mature sherry made from Pedro Ximinez grapes. Once harvested, Pedro Ximinez grapes shrivel up to a raisin-like state, which concentrates the sugars in the grape and results in a sweet wine with legendary viscosity and intensity. This double-maturation process complements the intensely smoky notes of the whisky and adds an additional layer of complexity. This limited edition whisky is one of the boldest and most intense whiskies ever made.

Tasting Notes:

Intense aroma of peaty smoke, wood spices and Earl Gray tea. Notes of peat, rich smoke and salty tang, which are balanced by subtle hints of vanilla and honeyed oak. Finish is incredible and intense, with complex notes of sweet caramel and fruits belying bolder notes of peat and smoke.
