The Best Bottles of Bourbon for the Holidays

delivered doorside to make life easy

The holiday season is here and shopping for the perfect gift can be as elusive as the fountain of youth...although we are pretty sure we may have found it at the bottom of one of these bottles. To make gifting just a little bit easier we took on the arduous task of tasting thousands of spirits and rounded up our top selections in some of the most popular categories for this holiday season.

Kings County
Straight Bourbon Whiskey

What Makes It Great:

Kings County Distillery is New York City's oldest operating whiskey distillery and the first distillery in New York City since Prohibition. A typewriter the two distillers found on the sidewalk in Williamsburg is used to make the labels that adorn their clear, flask-like bottles, while a hairdryer (made by Revlon) is used to affix each bottle seal. Handwritten scrawls on a chalkboard keep track of different batches, and mesh laundry bags are used as strainers. This bourbon is made from a mash of 70% organic, cracked corn, together with 30% Scottish malted barley and aged in five-gallon, charred American oak barrels for a minimum of twelve months.

Tasting Notes:

Aroma of vanilla and honey, which gives way to notes of clove and barley. The finish is smooth, with a sweet touch of caramel and honey.

Angel’s Envy
Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

What Makes It Great:

This bourbon is aged a minimum of four years (and up to six years), then double-barreled, or finished, for up to six months in 60-gallon casks that were formerly used to mature port. The casks, which are made of European oak, are hand-selected and imported directly from Portugal.  Angel's Envy Bourbon earned five stars from F. Paul Pacult's Spirit Journal and an astounding 98 points from Wine Enthusiast. In addition, The Bourbon Review called Angel's Envy "the world's finest bourbon."

Tasting Notes:

Notes of sweet caramel, raisins and toffee that fade into notes of cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. The long finish has hints of dark chocolate and caramelized fruit, with just a touch of cherry.

Barrell
Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey Batch #006

What Makes It Great:

The bourbon is matured for eight years and three months in charred, white American oak barrels before being bottled at cask strength (122.9 proof.) Barrell Straight Bourbon Whiskey earned a score of 95 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2015 and earned a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Tasting Notes:

Reddish amber color, along with an aroma of vanilla syrup, smoked figs, pears and caraway seeds.  The aroma gives way to notes of peaches and pralines, and leads to a finish highlighted by tobacco, corn and sweet maple syrup.

Wild Turkey Master’s Keep
17 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

What Makes It Great:

This is the oldest whiskey ever released by Wild Turkey, and the first to be released since Eddie Russell joined his father as Master Distiller earlier in 2015. Distilled in 1997, when Wild Turkey encountered a surplus of bourbon and shortage of space, Eddie decided to move the bourbon that would become Master’s Keep to a stone warehouse 200 miles away. After 17 years, Eddie believed the barrels had reached their peak flavor, and transported them back to Wild Turkey’s wooden warehouses before bottling them.

Tasting Notes:

Beautiful auburn color and aroma of caramel, vanilla, peaches, apricots and burnt sugar. The palate reveals big flavors of butterscotch, baking spices, blueberry pancakes and fresh maple, and leads to a refined finish marked by superb notes of citrus and toasted oak.

Four Roses
Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

What Makes It Great:

Straight bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years - Four Roses Bourbon is aged for a minimum of eight years in newly charred, white-oak casks. While most distilleries age bourbon in warehouses that are many stories high, Four Roses ages its bourbon in a one-story warehouse to ensure that each barrel is aged in a similar environment. This single barrel won the Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Tasting Notes:

A nose of plum and cherries, the bourbon is well-balanced and has notes of maple syrup, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Eagle Rare
10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

What Makes It Great:

Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey was matured for a minimum of ten years in new, American oak casks under the intense, Kentucky sun.  This bourbon earned a score of 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, 95 points from Robert Parker and the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, where it was named the "Best Bourbon."

Tasting Notes:

Golden honey color, along with an aroma of gentle toast, fresh tobacco and bananas. Notes of chocolate, almonds, melons, raisins and dried fruits on the palate, which are complemented by a subtle vanilla undertone. Finish is long and fierce, with hints of roasted nuts and corn.
