Flor de Caña (which is Spanish for "sugarcane flower") is a premium rum produced by Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua. Headquartered in Managua, Nicaragua, Compañia Licorera was founded in 1937 by Francisco Alfredo Pellas. Owned by Grupo Pellas, a 5th generation Pellas family member, still runs the company today.

Compañía Licorera also manufactures and distributes neutral spirits and alcohols, including industrial-scale alcohol products, and carbon dioxide, in addition to their finely aged rums. Sourcing their sugar from the largest sugar mill in Nicaragua, they are able to produce a variety of alcohol products at their facilities in both Nicaragua and Honduras. They export their aged rums in Europe and internationally.

Their facilities were expanded in 1996. This extensive distillery re-vamp resulted in Compañia Licorera de Nicaragua being the first distillery in the world to be granted the ISO-9002 certification. They craft their rums using a modern three-column still.

This modern design of the distillery, coupled with it's close proximity to the Ingenio San Antonio sugar mill in Chichigalpa (about 120 km from the capital of Managua), provides the distillery with a constant flow of molasses. Initially, the company’s plan was to develop a large sugarcane plantation. Subsequently, all of their products are crafted from sugar cane grown on the estate or bought from farmers located within a few miles of the sugar mill.

The facility boasts a state-of-the-art biogas generator, capable of producing methane which in turn is used to make steam for the distillation process. The CO2 that is produced during the fermentation process, is sold on an industrial scale to companies like Coca-Cola.

Flor de Caña rums are distilled five times and aged in a charred ex-bourbon white oak barrels, for up to 25 years. Their 18-year Centenario Gold is one of the oldest rums produced by the Flor de Caña brand. This award-winning spirit received a Gold medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition and 92 points from Wine Enthusiast. Expect elegant notes of caramel, nuts, and spice aromas.

Dark caramel, buttered nuts, and spice aromas on the nose. A rich, supple entry leads to a viscous, dryish, full-bodied palate with robust dark chocolate, caramel, roasted nuts and brown spice flavors. The finish is very long, with notes of charred oak, vanilla and burnt caramel fade.
