Allison Patel, former Prima Ballerina, and founder and proprietor of Brenne whisky, is a French whisky maverick who set out on a quest to find a true French single malt. Four hundred kilometers southwest of Paris, the city of Cognac, France (population 19,243) lends its name to one of the world's best-known types of brandy. There, a third-generation master distiller trained in the traditional art of cognac distillation — and with a secret love affair for whisky — has been making Brenne single malt whisky since 2002. Patel launched Brenne in 2012 in New York, collaborating this third-generation French master distiller.

He begins by harvesting barley grown at his farm in Cognac. After the barley is cool-fermented utilizing two to three different strains of yeast, the mash is carefully double-distilled in a copper alembic cognac still until it is ready for its slumber in new French Limousin oak casks. French Limousin oak — the most expensive type of wood for barrels in the world — is prized because it is loosely grained and porous, allowing it to impart more flavor and tannins to whisky that it comes in contact with. The French Limousin oak gives Brenne whiskies notes of oaky chocolate and a slight hint of caramel. After its rest in Limousin oak barrels before being finished in Cognac casks, giving it a hint of perfumed fruit that sets it apart from other whiskies.

This Estate cask expression was the first official release from Brenne whisky. Launched on October 1, 2012, in New York City, it carries no age statement, as each batch of Brenne Estate Cask is bottled individually by the barrel, making the age for each cask vary depending on how long the Cognac has been in the barrel. On average, this Brenne whisky ages for a total of about 7 years, before being bottled at 80 proof.
