During the Revolutionary War, British soldiers - known as redcoats - dressed in iconic woolen overcoats dyed crimson in color. The soldiers often complained of the coats during the war - not only were they conspicuous, the wool was also uncomfortably hot in the summer and insufficiently warm in the winter. In 1779, George Washington issued orders requiring infantryman in the Continental Army to wear uniforms comprised of dark blue coats with pewter buttons and golden accents.
Bluecoat American Dry Gin pays tribute to the character and independence of our founding fathers. It is a revolutionary departure - both in terms of style and substance - from the traditional London Dry Gins that saturate the market.
The gin's signature bottle - cobalt blue with reflective gold lettering - is an homage to the uniform of the Continental Army. The military coat of arms, etched onto each bottle of Bluecoat American Dry Gin, belies the subtle and interesting texture of the gin inside.
Handcrafted by Robert Cassell, Philadelphia Distilling's master distiller, Bluecoat American Dry Gin is made using a custom, hand-hammered copper pot still designed specifically for the production of small-batch spirits. The still's "lye arm and boil ball design, which are proprietary to our still, give me surgical control over the botanicals and ingredients I use in the gin,"Cassel says.
While the gin's exact recipe remains a closely guarded secret, Cassell admits that he uses only organic botanicals, including juniper, lemon peels, lime zest and sweet oranges. The organic juniper berries Cassell uses, which are plumper than traditional London Dry Gin juniper berries, add spicy herbal and earthy notes to the gin. In addition, the proprietary blend of organic, American citrus peels provide for a strong burst of fruitiness and mint. The result is an incredibly unique flavor profile that earned Bluecoat American Dry Gin the Double Gold Medal and title "Best Gin"at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
