This ultra-peated, limited edition single malt scotch whisky was released to celebrate the completion of Ardbeg's "Space Experiment", which concluded in 2014.
The southernmost of the Inner Hebridean Scottish Isles, the island of Islay (pronounced EYE-lah) is only 240 square miles and home to just over 3,000 people. Still, the island is one of just five distilling regions in Scotland whose identity is protected by law. Ardbeg Distillery, which is situated on the southern coast of Islay, was founded in 1815 by the MacDougall family. By 1886, nearly one-third of the population of Islay worked at the distillery and today, it stands as a testament to Scottish heritage and tradition.
In 2011, Ardbeg Distillery sent a special batch of whisky into orbit in order to study the effects of whisky maturation in space. Since its initial launch, this cosmic whisky has been orbiting the planet at 17,227 miles per hour, 15 times per day inside the International Space Station. In late 2014, the whisky entered the earth's atmosphere once again, and to commemorate the successful completion of Ardbeg’s space journey, for the first time in nearly five years Ardbeg has released a new, limited edition bottling of its famous Adrbeg Supernova release.
Ardbeg Supernova Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from malted barley, which is peated to more than 100 phenol parts per million — over twice the amount of standard Ardbeg whisky, which is peated to just 50 phenol parts per million. Once the grains have been fermented, they are distilled twice, first through a copper-pot wash still and then again through a copper-pot spirit still. The spirit still is equipped with a purifier, which acts as small condenser and causes a portion of the evaporating vapors to be pumped back into the pot and then re-distilled. This purification process, which is rare in the industry, results in whisky that has a signature fresh and malty flavor.
Following distillation, Ardbeg Supernova is matured in a variety of casks, most notably sherry casks, which are more prominent in this year’s Supernova release than in previous releases. The elevated sweetness from the sherry casks helps to balance whisky’s peatiness, and gives the whisky an earthy aroma, along with hints of herbs, juicy citrus and dark chocolate. The palate brings forth more smokiness, accented by honey, chili peppers and more dark chocolate. The whisky finishes with its signature peat flavor, along with notes of black pepper and ginger.
